Yesterday morning we set off from our accommodation for the trek down the mountain to the village of Nongriat, in the East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya State, to see the awesome double decker root bridge and Rainbow falls waterfall.
From our research, we knew it was going to be a challenging trek, for us 50 year olds, down the reported 3000 to 3700 narrow, steep steps along the 4km walk to the tiny, unspoiled village of Nongrait.
We don’t know exactly how many steps there actually were, but we can confirm that it felt like they were never going to end……. Eventually, they did and the terrain levelled out a little. As we started our descent, we were passed by a group of young Indians, who were on a bit of a mission.
Our steady pace meant that we kept passing them when they had to stop for rest breaks. We eventually arrived about 20 minutes before them.
