Cherrapunji was the next destination and it was quite a simple journey to get there. A shared jeep (sumo) to Shillong and then another sumo to Cherrapunji.
From our accommodation at the Debadaru Guest House in Guwahati. We took an Uber for the 20 minute journey to the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) Khanapara bus stand, for 300 Rupees. This is the roadside site from where the sumos to Shillong depart. The cost per person for a seat was 200 Rupees. Again luggage was on the roof.
Taking about 2 and a half hours to travel. Firstly along National Highway 27 then National Highway 6. Winding up through the hills, on what are good roads for India. Passing Umiam lake, then entering Shillong and passing Wards lake before the sumo stopped on Soso Tham Road.
We had to make our way to the Cherrapunji sumo stand. A short 15 minute walk along Soso Tham Road to the roundabout. Then along GS Road, turning left as you start going up the hill. At the end of that street, turn left again and there is a bus stand on the left. Go up the ramp onto the first level. Immediately on the right, painted on the concrete ceiling beam is the destination name of Sohra. This is the local name for Cherrapunji and where the sumo will be parked.
The journey from Shillong to Cherrapunji took about an hour and a half and cost 80 Rupees per person, The sumo dropped us in Church Road, just off National Highway 5 in Upper Cherrapunji. Our accommodation at La Kupar Inn, booked through Booking.com, was a short 10 minute taxi journey from where we were dropped off.
