Getting to the Indian Myanmar border crossing at Moreh was a simple journey from Imphal.
From our accommodation at the Sangai Continental (The Boutique Hotel), we took a tuk tuk to the Moreh shared taxi parking stand. This is situated on the National Highway 102 opposite Yaiskul police Lane.
As soon as the tuk tuk stopped it was surrounded by minivan drivers all attempting to get us into their minivans. Even saying that they were only waiting for 2 more people then they could go. Looking across at the empty minivans, this was clearly just one of their tactics to obtain our custom. We looked around and we chose which of the minivans we wanted to go in.
The minivans are basically Suzuki eeco 7 seaters. The one we got didn’t have the back row of seats in use, allowing the backpacks to go in the van. One person sat in the front and three of us on the middle seat, making it quite a comfortable ride for us.
We left Imphal at 1100 hrs, the 3 hour journey cost 300 Rupees per person.
The journey started along very good, smooth, and straight roads. Along the way, there is a checkpoint at Pallel Mamang Leilani, for which foreigners are required to present their passports at the foreigners checkpoint, a quick and easy process.
From this point onwards the road going across the mountains was horrendous. Admittedly it is that way because a new road is under construction. There were a further 2 checkpoints that have to be cleared before entering the border town of Moreh. Both of which require foreigners to present their passports.
The town of Moreh has nothing to offer tourists, other than the opportunity to cross the border to Myanmar. There are a couple of reasonable places to stay, but that is about it.
Our preferred accommodation, the Elora Hotel, was fully booked, even though it didn’t look so. The minivan driver very kindly took us to an alternative place to stay, which although undergoing some construction work, was spacious and clean. It was off the main road, the turning pretty much opposite the Elora Hotel turning.
