The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice
The FCO gives good up to date visa advice. Beware of blogs advising about visa requirements as these constantly change. There are many scam sites that try to get you to go through them for your visa application. Charging you a huge service fee. Follow the links and advice given by the FCO and you won’t go wrong.
As with vaccinations allow sufficient time to get all the visas required. A lot of countries now do e-visas which are simple and easy to get online.
However, others still need to apply in person. China is a good example of a visa for which you need to visit a Chinese visa application centre. Chinese visa application process does not recognise entry into China via land borders. So for a visa application, you will require flight tickets and proof of accommodation. You can book fully refundable flights with Air France and accommodation with Booking.com. Cancel both when you have your visa.
With some other countries, it works out cheaper getting a visa on entry rather than before you go. E.g Nepal. The London Embassy charge £25 for a visa. Whereas, if you get a visa on arrival you will only be charged $25. You may have to hang around at the border to obtain your visa. However, if you have no time issues, then the savings make it worth it.
Most countries require entry visas to be paid for in US Dollars and some require 6 months’ validity on your passport when you LEAVE the country. Ensure you have sufficient blank pages in your passport for visas and entry/exit stamps.

(1) Apply for the E-visa online. Receive the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) letter within 5 days. Print ETA and present at Immigration Check Post where E-visa will be stamped in the passport.
(2) Apply for the E-visa online. Receive the Letter of Approval (LoA) within 3 days. Print LoA and present at Immigration Check Post where eVisa will be stamped in the passport.
